Air Conditioner Clutch Relay - 2001 Chevy Venture

May 1, 2005:

I recently had some trouble with my air conditioner.  The symptoms were that sometimes the A/C would turn on, and sometimes it would not.

One day I noticed that when I went over a bump in the road, the air coming out of the vents started to get cold (I had left the switch on).  After stopping for gas, the air was warm again.

When I got home, I left the motor running with the A/C switch on and opened the hood.  I looked down to see if the compressor clutch was engaged.  Nope -- I could see the compressor was not turning (center portion was stationary).

I then removed the under-hood fuse & relay cover and "tapped" on the relay that controls the A/C compressor clutch with my fingers. I heard a "click" and could now see that the compressor was turning (center was spinning).

Since I noticed that the numbers on the A/C clutch relay were the same as the horn relay, I swapped them around (with the van off) and tried again.  A/C clutch works and the horn does too.

I will leave the relays where they are for now, keep an eye on their operation, and replace one (or both) of the relays if necessary.

One other note: I noticed what may have been a bit of corrosion on the pins of the horn relay.  I cleaned them off before swapping.

May 8, 2005 Update:

I have been testing the A/C over the past week and it has been turning on every time I have tested it.  I don't use the horn much, but it has worked each time I have tested it.  I MAY have noticed that when I pressed the horn (steering wheel) lightly the horn would not make any noise, but pushing harder has always worked.
I will call the parts department soon to price the relays.

May 26, 2005 Update:

I tested the horn today and it did NOT work.  This is where I had swapped the relay earlier.  I even tapped on it like I did before, but no go.  I could hear the "click" but no horn.

I called the parts department at the dealer and he said is was about 23 dollars. I also called the local parts house and they said about 13 dollars.  Guess where I went to get it?  Anyway, it ended up being $13.69 with tax.

The horn now works again and the Air Conditioner continues to operate properly.
